Instrument sets

DrPond uses data files called sound patches embedded in the web page. This eliminates potential problems of having to load files subject to security restrictions when accessing the local drive.

To keep the load time reasonable the set of sound patches is kept small. Different web pages have different collections of instruments

Wave

The wave page contains no embedded sound patches. It loads the fatest, the frequency of the sound is correct, but the timbre of the sound is not often desirable.

Basic

The basic page has a small collection of short patches for the piano. It loads faster than other sound patch pages, but there is only one instrument and the sound quality is not great. The short patches mean that longer notes sound too short. One advantage is that these are mp3 files, so they will work in more browsers. The others use encoded ogg vorbis files that will not work with Safari.

Piano

The piano page has an adequate collection of patches for a piano. It is not as good as what you normally would use with a modern synthesizer or audio workstation, but it is pretty good.

Band

This pages conatins a small number of instruments for a basic band. It has a guitar, bass guitar, and small drum set. It also provides a piano. For toms, it uses:

For other unpitched instruments, it includes a snare (sn), basss drum(bd), side sticks (ss), ride cymbal (cymr), ride bell(rb), crash cymbal(cymc), chinese cymbal (cymch), splash cymbal (cyms) hihat open (hho), hihat closed (hhc), hihat pedal(hhp)

Technically, there is not an adequate replacement for vocals. The standard solution for a digitial audio workstation is to add a recorded vocal track. But if you are going that route, you may as well build the music entirely within the digital audio workstation and play the result in the wave table page as an audio file. There is no need to load DrPond instrument patches.

DrPond

This includes more instruments than the band and the drum set is larger. Currently the extra instrument is just an accoustic guitar.
